“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity” (Colossians 4:5)
To say this has been an interesting week would be an understatement. I spent more time than usual scrolling on social media early in the week for various reasons. It seemed that each time I was confronted with anger, bitterness, divisiveness, hostility, aggressiveness… need I go on? People have different opinions about this war that is going on. That event turned the volume intensity up past “deaf-con” as we say around here. The “noise” was so loud I turned it off.
How did we get to this place? I know that some super-intelligent people have written papers and books on the subject, but in simple language, I do not know when the change happened, when the corner was turned. There was a time we could talk through differences in opinion – without hatred and bitterness. There was a time when ‘what was best’ or ‘what was right’ would be what was done.
There is evil in the world. We know that; we know the author of evil’s name. We know he does not win. But golly, right this minute, it feels tricky to see the good for the evil. Yet I will stand on the promises of God, trusting His word to be true. I will trust His character, believing He is who He says He is, and He will do what He says He will do.
So, what are we to do? I have said clearly, here and elsewhere, that as Christians we need to take a stand. We need to proclaim the truth. But, ladies and gentlemen, calling people names, using vicious, vulgar, nasty language on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media is not going to change anyone’s position on a situation – ever. Taking on the ‘opponent’ on social media is not the way to win the battle, let alone the war.
Please, if you profess Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, allow Him to be Lord of your words also. Take a stand and speak Biblical truth, but with respect for others. If possible, speak in person. Listen carefully before speaking.
“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity” (Colossians 4:5).
Think first … asking yourself what I expect the best outcome to be.
In Prayer and Service to Christ.
